Short answer: A full tank message, often shown as P1 or STOP, means the portable AC's internal drain pan has filled. The maker pages say cooling and dehumidifying stop until the water is drained. Check the lower drain port or bottom drain plug, empty the pan, and restart. If the message returns right away, Whynter, Midea and Frigidaire all point owners to maker support.

What P1 or STOP is telling you

P1 is the common full tank code, but the exact message depends on the maker. Midea's portable air conditioner FAQ lists P1 as a full bottom tray and says to attach the drain hose and empty the tray. Whynter's troubleshooting page uses a flashing red light with STOP or P1 for a full internal water reservoir and points owners to the lower drain port. The Whynter ARC-1030WN, ARC-1230WN and ARC-1230WNH manual adds that the unit beeps eight times, shows P1, and stops cooling or dehumidifying while the fan may keep running. Frigidaire's room air conditioner error code guide also lists P1 as a full bottom tray. For a broader explanation of codes, see reading error codes.

The message is not a general failure code. It is a protection message: the unit has collected more condensate than it can hold or evaporate at that moment. The maker pages treat it as a water handling issue first, and only point to service when the message stays after the water is gone.

MakerWhat the support page says about the full tank message
MideaP1 means the bottom tray is full. The FAQ says to attach the drain hose and empty the water, and to call for service if the code repeats.
WhynterSTOP or P1 with a flashing red light means the internal water reservoir is full. The troubleshooting page says to drain the lower drain port and contact Whynter support if the message stays after draining.
FrigidaireP1 means the bottom tray is full. The error code guide points to the bottom drain plug and says to contact support if the code returns after a reset.

Why the pan fills at all

Portable ACs pull moisture out of the room air as they cool. Midea's FAQ explains that condensate gathers in a pan inside the unit and leaves as vapor through the exhaust hose. That is why a unit can run for a long time without a drain hose. In humid conditions, the FAQ says the unit will occasionally need to be drained. Whynter's troubleshooting page makes the same point from the other direction: frequent draining is linked to high ambient humidity, and the page suggests shutting windows and doors to the room and sealing them. For the full water path, see how a portable AC handles the water it collects.

The pan is a buffer, not a limitless tank. When the air holds a lot of moisture, or when outside air with high humidity is pulled into a dual-hose unit, the pan can fill faster than the exhaust air can carry the vapor away. That is why the same unit can go a long time without a message in dry weather and then show P1 during a sticky spell.

Where to drain and what to check

The maker pages do not all use the same drain point. Whynter's troubleshooting page says to drain the lower drain port and notes that some units use a rubber stopper while others use a plastic drain cover and rubber stopper, so the manual for the model shows which one it has. Midea's FAQ describes a drain cap behind the unit, with water that starts flowing as soon as the cap is opened, and it suggests a pan and towels. Frigidaire's error code guide points to the bottom drain plug and notes that tilting or angling the unit may help the water drain. These are maker descriptions, not a single procedure for every portable AC. The drain plug and water tray guide covers the common layouts.

Before draining, turn the unit off and give the water a clear path to a pan or drain location. The Whynter manual for the ARC-1030WN series says the continuous drain hose must go straight down with no kinks or bends, because the drain works by gravity. If the hose loops upward, water can sit in the pan even though a hose is connected.

When the message comes back after draining

The frustrating case is a message that returns right after draining. Whynter's troubleshooting page says that if the red light is still flashing and STOP or P1 still appears after draining, a loose connection inside the unit may be the cause, and the page directs owners to Whynter Customer Support for service. Midea's FAQ says to call for service if the protection code repeats. Frigidaire's error code guide says to contact support if P1 returns after a reset. Midea's FAQ also advises against removing the case of the unit, so a message that keeps coming back after a proper drain is a matter for maker support.

A message that returns within minutes can also mean the unit is collecting water faster than expected. High humidity, a window left open, or a dual-hose intake pulling in damp outside air can all add moisture. Check those conditions before assuming the sensor or the drain path is at fault.

Humidity, hose setup and the dual-hose intake

Humidity is the usual reason a portable AC needs draining more often. Whynter's troubleshooting page lists high ambient humidity as the cause of frequent draining and suggests shutting windows and doors to the room and sealing them. For dual-hose models, the same page advises taking the intake hose off when the air outside is damp or rain is falling. That advice is specific to dual-hose units: the intake hose can bring humid outside air into the unit, and removing it changes how the unit handles moisture. See single-hose vs dual-hose portable ACs for the difference in how those units move air.

Window and door gaps matter too. If humid air keeps entering the room, the AC has more moisture to remove. The window kit sealing guide explains how the foam seals and slider kit close those gaps. A tighter room means less moisture load and fewer drain stops. If a dual-hose unit is the right fit for the room, the dual-hose portable AC guide lists models by that feature.

What not to do when the message appears

Do not keep running the unit and wait for the message to clear on its own. The Whynter manual says the cooling or dehumidifying action stops when the pan is full, so the room will not get cooler while the message is showing. Do not ignore a message that returns after every drain either. The maker pages treat a repeat message as a reason to contact support, not as a prompt to open panels or check internal parts.

Do not treat the message as a sign that the unit is too small or too large for the room. It is a water message, not a capacity message. If the room is not getting cool for other reasons, the checks for an AC that is not cooling enough cover the usual causes separately.

Which to choose

If youLook for
If you see P1 on a Midea portableAttach the drain hose, empty the bottom tray, then restart. Call for service if the code repeats.
If you see STOP or P1 on a Whynter portableDrain the lower drain port, using the owner's manual to confirm whether the port has a rubber stopper or a drain cover.
If you see P1 on a Frigidaire unitTake the unit to a place where it can drain, take out the bottom drain plug, and let the water run out. Angle the unit if the flow is slow.
If the message returns after every drainContact maker support. Whynter, Midea and Frigidaire all point to service when the message stays after the water is removed.
If the unit needs draining oftenCheck room humidity and window gaps. On a dual-hose model, take the intake hose off when the air outside is damp or rain is falling.

Questions people ask

Does a full tank message mean the AC is broken?

Not usually. The maker pages describe P1 or STOP as a full drain pan. Drain the water and restart. A message that returns after draining is the case the pages send to maker support.

Why does the fan keep running after P1 appears?

The Whynter ARC-1030WN series manual says cooling or dehumidifying stops when the pan is full, but the fan may continue to operate. The fan running does not mean the unit is still cooling.

Can a portable AC run without a drain hose?

Yes. Midea's FAQ says the unit holds condensate in a pan inside and releases it as vapor through the exhaust hose. In humid conditions, the unit will occasionally need to be drained.

Why does a dual-hose unit fill faster in rainy weather?

Whynter's troubleshooting page advises taking the intake hose off on dual-hose models when the air outside is damp or rain is falling. The intake hose can bring humid outside air into the unit.

Should the drain hose run uphill?

No. The Whynter ARC-1030WN series manual says the continuous drain works by gravity and the hose must go straight down with no kinks or bends.
