Short answer: A running fan only proves the blower works. Midea and Whynter both start with the mode: the unit must be in Cool, not Fan or Dry, and the set temperature must sit below the room temperature. Whynter gives the compressor 3 minutes to start after Cool is selected and notes a 5°F cushion, so a unit set close to the room reading may never call for cooling at all.

A running fan does not mean the unit is cooling

A room air conditioner has two jobs, and they sound different. The fan moves air through the cabinet and out the louvers. The compressor is the part that removes heat, and Midea tells owners to listen for the humming noise it makes when it starts. If the fan is running and the air leaving the vent feels like room temperature, the blower is doing its job and the cooling side is not running.

That split matters because it narrows the search. A fan that spins rules out a dead unit and points at the mode setting, the compressor delay, the room conditions or restricted airflow. The checks below follow the order the makers themselves use.

Start with the mode and the set temperature

Both Midea and Whynter put mode at the top of the list. Midea's window unit guidance says the unit must be set to Cool, not Fan, and that the set temperature must be lower than the room temperature. Whynter's portable guidance is the same instruction in different words: press the mode button until the cool icon appears. A unit left in Fan or Dry mode will run the fan all day without cooling, which is exactly the symptom being described. Cool, Dry and Fan Modes on a Portable AC explains what each of those settings actually does.

Whynter also describes a temperature cushion that catches people out. Its portables cool until the room comes within 5°F of the set temperature, then stop. If the set point sits only a little below the room reading, the unit can treat the job as finished. Lower the set temperature by more than that cushion so the compressor has a reason to run.

Give the compressor its three minutes

Whynter states that the compressor needs 3 minutes to turn on after Cooling mode is selected. Midea's guidance is looser, asking the owner to listen for the compressor after a few minutes and to lower the set temperature and try again if nothing is heard. Three minutes feels long in a warm room, but the delay is normal. Set the mode, set a temperature well below the room reading, and leave the unit alone for the full delay.

Check the room against the unit's operating range

Whynter lists an ambient range of 64°F to 90°F for its portable units and says they work best inside it. A garage, sunroom or upstairs room can sit above that band on a hot afternoon, and a unit with nothing wrong will still struggle. Frigidaire approaches the same idea from the other direction: it asks for a well-insulated, enclosed room, and Whynter adds that direct sunlight entering the room works against the unit. Why Some Rooms Are Harder to Cool Than Others covers the load side in more detail.

Whynter also names heat sources inside the room, including cooking appliances and extra people, and suggests turning off what can be turned off and adding a fan to move air around. Frigidaire asks owners to close every opening in the room, including the side curtains on the unit and the window framing it sits in.

Feel the air at the vent before suspecting a fault

Frigidaire gives a useful number: the unit should drop the temperature of the air it pulls in by 17 to 20°F before blowing it into the room, and if the air coming out is cold, the unit is working. That turns a vague feeling into a comparison. Air that is clearly colder than the room points to a load or airflow problem rather than a dead compressor. Air that matches the room points back to the mode, the delay or the compressor itself.

Airflow is the next check on both makers' lists. Frigidaire asks owners to keep the entire front and back of the unit clear, to leave the side louvers uncovered and to aim the louvers so air is not deflecting off a wall or ceiling back into the unit. Whynter asks for at least 20 inches of clearance from the air intake area and warns against blocking the exhaust. A dirty filter restricts the same path, and How to Clean a Room Air Conditioner Filter covers that job.

Portable units: water, hose and fan speed

Whynter's portable list adds causes a window unit does not have. A full internal water reservoir stops cooling, so a unit that ran fine yesterday and now only moves air may simply need draining. The exhaust hose matters too: Whynter asks owners to keep it as short and straight as possible, to avoid sharp bends, and not to extend it beyond 9 ft, because a kinked or overlong hose leaves heat in the room. Leaky connections around the window kit have the same effect, and Sealing the Window Kit on a Portable AC walks through the fit.

Whynter also notes that a low fan speed can make cooling feel absent and suggests a higher setting. On water handling in general, How a Portable AC Handles the Water It Collects explains where the condensation goes and why a portable can shut down on its own.

If the air is cold but the room stays warm, look at size

Frigidaire's first question for a not-cooling unit is whether it is sized correctly for the room, and Whynter asks owners to check the unit against the square footage it is rated for. If the cooling capacity falls short of what the room calls for, cold air at the vent can still leave the room warm, and Whynter notes the room may need additional cooling or another air conditioner. Choosing the Right BTU for Your Room Size explains how the ratings map to room size, and What Happens When a Room AC Is Too Big covers the opposite mistake, where a unit cools and shuts off too quickly to remove much moisture.

When to stop and contact the maker

Both makers draw a line between owner checks and service. Frigidaire directs owners of units installed within the past 30 days back to the installer, and owners of older units to its support team to arrange service. Whynter sends owners to its customer support when the full-tank light or P1 code stays on after the reservoir has been drained. The owner's manual gives the power requirements for each model.

If the display is showing a code rather than a temperature, Frigidaire publishes an error code guide that gives the meaning for its room air conditioners, and Reading Room AC Error Codes explains how to approach one. Which to choose

If youLook for
If the display shows Fan or DrySwitch to Cool and set the temperature below the room reading, then wait.
If you just switched the unit to CoolLeave it alone for 3 minutes, the delay Whynter gives before the compressor starts.
If the set temperature is only slightly below the roomLower it by more than the 5°F cushion Whynter describes, so cooling has a reason to start.
If the room is outside 64°F to 90°FWait for the room to come into that band, the ambient range Whynter lists for its portables.
If the vent air feels only slightly coolCheck the filter, the intake and exhaust clearance, and the hose routing before assuming a fault.
If a portable stops cooling and a tank indicator is onDrain the internal reservoir, then restart the unit in Cool mode.
If the air is cold but the room never gets thereCompare the unit's stated square footage or BTU rating with the room and its heat sources.

Questions people ask

Why does the fan run but no cold air come out?

The fan and the compressor are separate parts. Midea and Whynter both say to confirm the unit is in Cool mode with a set temperature below the room reading, then allow up to 3 minutes for the compressor to start. If the vent air is still room temperature after that, work through airflow, water and sizing before assuming a fault.

How long should you wait for the compressor?

Whynter states 3 minutes after Cooling mode is selected. Midea asks owners to listen for the compressor hum after a few minutes. Set the mode and temperature once and give the unit that time before changing anything.

Why does the unit stop before the room reaches the set temperature?

Whynter's portables cool until the room is within 5°F of the set temperature, so a set point close to the current reading can end cooling early. Midea lists restricted airflow, from a dirty filter or a blocked vent, as the most common reason a window unit shuts off early.

Can Fan mode cool the room?

No. Fan mode moves air without running the compressor, and Whynter lists a unit left in Dry or Fan mode as a cause of no cooling. Switch the unit to Cool.

Does a dirty filter stop cooling?

It can. Both makers list restricted airflow among the causes. Midea suggests feeling the air at the vent and through the fins on the back of the unit, and cleaning it if the flow feels weak. Whynter asks for a clean pre-filter and clear space around the intake.

What room temperature does a portable unit need?

Whynter lists 64°F to 90°F as the ambient range where its portables work best. Outside that band, cooling suffers even on a unit with nothing wrong with it.

When should you contact the maker?

Frigidaire sends owners of units installed within 30 days back to the installer and older units to its support team for service. Whynter asks owners to contact its customer support when the full-tank light or P1 code stays on after draining.
